Tap suspends direct Johannesburg-Lisbon service
From the start of the European Summer season, Tap will discontinue its direct Johannesburg-Lisbon flight. A statement issued by the airline said through the signing of an MoU with Mozambique's LAM,starting from June, it (TAP) would combine all direct flights operated by both airlines from Portugal to Mozambique and South Africa. Currently TAP operates three flights a week between Lisbon and Maputo will operate as code share flights, two on TAP and two on LAM-operated aircraft. LAM will provide connections between Maputo and Johannesburg to coincide with the Lisbon arrivals and departures. These flights will also carry the TAP code enabling passenger and baggage check-in to the final destination, in turn simplifying pricing tariffs. In the near future the same operating model is being planned for Cape Town. TAP will increase the weekly flight frequency to Maputo and is now considering expanding its operation to new destinations in South Africa. ( Source: clubofmozambique )

Namaacha Falls Under Private Management
The waterfalls in the southern Mozambican district of Namaacha, on the border with Swaziland, are now being managed by the South African company Green Resort, according to a report in the Beira daily paper “Diario de Mocambique”. The waterfalls are one of the main tourist attractions in Namaacha, and Green Resort has a contract to manage them for 50 years. In addition, the National Directorate of Forestry has granted Green Resort an area of 3,000 hectares to be reforested. According to the mayor of Namaacha town, Jorge Tinga, farming the area out to a private investor is intended to provide more attractive facilities. The company, he said, has guaranteed that it will maintain the water circulation system that feeds the falls, and will construct leisure centers for visitors to the falls. The municipal council preferred to hand over management to a private company, because it recognizes that it has no vocation for running waterfalls and forests”, said Tinga. With the new management, we hope that tourism will take its due place, with visitors contemplating one of the most attractive points in the municipality”, he added. Maputo provincial governor Maria Jonas, who visited Namaacha on Wednesday, noted that tourism is “a sleeping wealth” in this area, which could bring many gains to the municipality if properly exploited. Opening of Marine Reserve’s headquarters, Mozambique
Mozambique’s Minister of Tourism , officially opened the headquarters of the Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve in the Lubombo Transfrontier Conservation and Resource Area (TFCA). It is a day for conservation in Mozambique and a significant step in the development of this, Africa’s first marine TFCA. The ceremony was attended by numerous dignitaries. This important occasion follows on the Turing Foundation kindly supporting the construction of the Marine Reserve’s headquarters, consisting of an office, a laboratory, marine guard dormitories and a lounge, once approval by the Mozambique Ministry of Tourism had been obtained. Turing Foundation also funded a house for the marine manager. The development of Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve got under way on 14 July 2009, when the government of Mozambique declared the 678 km² marine protected area, stretching from Ponta do Ouro in the south to the Maputo River Mouth in Maputo Bay in the north. The Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve stretches three nautical miles into the Indian Ocean and includes Inhaca Island and Portuguese Island. To increase the efficacy of the turtle monitoring programme along the 90km coastline, outposts were constructed at Ponta Milibangalala and Machangulo thanks to further donor support, including that of Van Cleef & Arpels, the Machangulo Group and Turing Foundation. The Machangulo Group also donated a quad bike to the marine project, thus bettering beach patrols. Drs Halbesma said that Turing Foundation was proud to be part of the opening ceremony and to witness the result of their support that was contributing to the conservation of this stretch of coast and the protection of a critically endangered marine species. Bush and Beach in Mozambique: Community-Private Partnership Backs Future Eco-Lodge
A landmark agreement has launched the development of a $3 million eco-lodge in Mozambique's Maputo Special Reserve, a 70,000-hectare prime protected area. Bordering the Indian Ocean, the reserve offers tourists a varied experience of beaches, bays, coral reefs, forests, lakes, rivers, and a host of wildlife including an estimated 350 elephants. The 25-year partnership agreement creates a joint venture between a local community association, A Hi Zameni Chemucane, and a private investor, the Bell Foundation, to build and operate a 36-bed lodge at Ponta Chemucane in the reserve. It is Mozambique's first agreement granting a community long-term concession rights for a tourist area within one of the country's leading national parks. The lodge is expected to create 60 full-time jobs and help spur local growth in an area that has few opportunities for formal employment. In addition, annual concession fees to be paid to the government will be used for park and longer-term conservation management. As part of the broader Mozambique Anchor Tourism Investment Program, IFC assisted the government in developing and implementing a private-sector investment strategy and procurement approach to attract qualified eco-tourism investors for the Maputo Special Reserve.
