VISA
All visitors (except citizens of Swaziland , South Africa , Tanzania , Botswana ,Malawi , Mauritius , Zimbabwe , & Zambia) need a visa,at some land borders and Mozambique's embassies.
We always recommend the traveler to acquire the visa prior to the trip in the Mozambican embassy or consulate of the departing country. However, one can also acquire the 30 days visa at some of the border custom or international airports (Maputo, Vilanculos and Pemba) ,inside the country.
This visa maybe renewed one (1) time for another thirty days. Visa's on entry can be purchased in Meticais and US dollars, although the South African Rand is also accepted. The visa obtained at the embassy or consulate maybe renewed (2) times. If the visa expires, each day that passes in Mozambique costs 40USD
•The cost of the visa is approximately 85$ or 20€.
•Passport with at least six months validity with at least one empty page.
•Two passport photos.
•Proof of secured accommodation.
Currency
The official currency in Mozambique is the Metical. The US Dollar and the South African Rand are acceptable to a degree. The average rates vary around €1=44MT and $1=32MT. However, we would still encourage you to carry Meticals.

Health
Health regulations in Mozambique require visitors to have a yellow fever certificate if travelling from infected areas. Malaria is a risk throughout the year in the whole country. Cholera and other water-borne diseases are prevalent during the rainy season. Diseases caused by unsanitary conditions are common throughout the country, and untreated water should be considered unsafe to drink.
Hospital facilities are generally meager and outside the major cities of Maputo and Beira medical facilities are limited. Mozambique has high rates of HIV/AIDS, so it is also advisable to always carry condoms with you. We also recommend to have Health Insurance.
Traffic and Road Conditions
The EN4 toll road between Maputo and South Africa is well-maintained. Official Americans are prohibited from traveling outside cities after dark because of the increased risk of banditry, poor road conditions in some areas, poor maintenance of many vehicles in the country (e.g., no headlights or rear lights), as well as the threat imposed by livestock grazing on roadsides.
Travel outside Maputo often requires a four-wheel drive vehicle, which creates an additional security risk since these vehicles are high-theft items. Public transportation is limited and often has poor safety standards.
The main north-south thoroughfare is passable until the city of Caia (Sofala province), where vehicle passengers must disembark and cross the Zambezi River by ferryboat. On the north side of the river, the road continues to the Northern provinces. The road network connecting provincial capitals is in fair condition, but can be riddled with potholes and other obstacles.
